What Is Emerald Cave?

Emerald Cave is a natural rock alcove carved into the volcanic canyon walls of Black Canyon, along a quiet stretch of the Colorado River near Willow Beach, Arizona. It isn’t a tunnel you paddle through — it’s a wide, open pocket in the cliff face where you glide in and float. Sunlight bounces off the pale rock and filters through the clear, still water, giving the cave its glowing, turquoise-green color. The effect is strongest in the late morning, once the sun is high enough to reach directly inside.

The cave sits inside the Black Canyon National Water Trail, a National Park Service–designated stretch of river winding through the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. There are no roads or hiking trails to Emerald Cave — the only way in is by kayak, canoe, or boat.

Emerald Cave is one of the most photographed spots on the Colorado River, and for good reason — few places let you paddle straight into glowing turquoise water surrounded by towering, pale canyon walls. It’s also a genuine bucket-list stop: since it can only be reached by water, seeing it in person is a very different experience from seeing it in a photo.

Getting There

Emerald Cave sits within Black Canyon on the Colorado River, about 12 miles south of Hoover Dam near Willow Beach, Arizona — roughly a 90-minute drive from the Las Vegas Strip. Since there’s no land access, the cave is typically visited on a guided or self-drive kayak tour launching from Willow Beach.
