Discover What Makes the Hoover Dam Truly Remarkable

Hoover Dam with reservoir and surrounding rocky landscape under clear sky.

Hoover Dam is one of America’s defining landmarks, where ambitious engineering meets the stark beauty of the Colorado River. Built during the Great Depression, it continues to draw visitors with its history, massive scale, and dramatic setting.

A Monument of Engineering

Completed in 1936 after five demanding years of work, the dam rises 726 feet and stretches more than 1,200 feet across Black Canyon. Its builders used more than 90 million cubic feet of concrete, poured in carefully cooled blocks to protect the structure for the long term.

Lake Mead and Hydroelectric Power

The dam created Lake Mead, the country’s largest man-made reservoir. Its water serves Nevada, Arizona, and California, while the dam’s 17 turbines generate billions of kilowatt-hours of electricity each year for the Southwest.

Together, the reservoir and power plant show the dam’s lasting role in water storage, flood control, irrigation, and regional growth.

A Workforce Legacy

More than 20,000 workers contributed to construction during a difficult economic era. They labored through extreme desert heat, long shifts, and dangerous conditions, creating a landmark that remains a tribute to their persistence and skill.

Art Deco Beauty and Visitor Views

Hoover Dam is more than functional infrastructure. Its Art Deco details, bronze sculpture, and geometric forms give it a distinctive 1930s character. The Visitor Center and the Mike O’Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge provide excellent places to appreciate both the design and the canyon around it.

Ways to Experience the Dam

Millions visit every year for exhibits, films, tours, and the chance to walk across the dam or its neighboring bridge. For a different perspective, kayaking on the Colorado River lets visitors see the scale of the structure from the water while enjoying the canyon landscape.

An Enduring Symbol

Its combination of innovation, history, architecture, and practical importance is what makes Hoover Dam so remarkable. Whether seen from an overlook, a tour, or the river below, it remains a powerful reminder of human ambition set against a spectacular desert landscape.
